Malone Electrical has been around since the late 90’s when Tom completed his electrical apprenticeship and started his career as a domestic electrician.
In 2017, Tom and Jules decided to change lifestyle and leave the rat-race, for health and socio-political reasons. We both left our jobs, sold our house in Cornwall, and now live on “Billy Miller” our 57’ narrowboat. 💜
We knew a lot of people already living permanently off-grid, and using Tom’s existing knowledge and experience, he researched larger solar systems, to enable us more freedom by being as self-sufficient as possible whilst cruising. At festivals and among other friends, Tom’s growing solar knowledge base proved helpful, advice was sought or shared and given 👍🏼
We have 4 x 270W poly panels on our narrowboat with a solar controller and 5 leisure batteries including a Lithium drop-in. The 3000W inverter charger then supplies us with 240v. We soon realised that we had excess un-utilised power within our system, so we now have a washing machine* on board, as well as an electric kettle*, ice making machine* & a new mini air conditioning unit* (as our summers are getting hotter) all powered by the sun☀️
*dependant on solar hours available and size of system.
Tom qualified as an electrician as a lad of 17 (back in the days of apprenticeships!) and has progressed throughout his working career via domestic electrical, Marine electronic and into industrial engineering, focussing on electrical and electronic equipment.
Specialising in food manufacturing, he was Team Leader at an International meat processing company and eventually became Engineering Manager at an ice cream factory in Cornwall.
Tom’s project planning, research and preparation skills have since become invaluable in our day to day boat life, along with fault finding expertise on many different levels of equipment.
Living our life ‘as free as we can be‘ took a toll on our savings 😉 ... and rather than Tom return to contract/project work back in industrial factories, we expanded the Malone Electrical business into Malone Electrical Solar Services.
Since inception in 2019 to April 2023, we have installed over over 340 solar panels for more than 200 customers 😱 with an estimated annual output of over 80 megaWatt hours of power 🤩
Based on IPCC data we have potentially saved the planet from more than 180 tonnes of CO2e from the atmosphere to date 👏🏼
Solar power starts repaying your initial outlay as soon as it is connected ☀️
Reduces reliance on expensive fossil fuels.
Allows responsible off-grid freedom.
Panels guaranteed for 12 years.
